Head Coach & Director
Mike Kalin
Mike Kalin is MIT Sailing head coach, and the head coach and director of Building 51 Sailing. Mike has been with the MIT sailing program since 2014, and previously from 2000 - 2006, helping the coed team to a consistent ranking among the top 15 in the nation, with the squad placing as high as 11th at Nationals.
In 2006, Kalin left MIT to compete full-time for the Canadian Sailing Team where he was the fourth-ranked member of the team in the Olympic Laser class, winning the Marvin McDill Award in 2006 for the top rookie performance at an Olympic class world championship. Since sailing for the Canadian team he served as the sailing director at the St. Francis Yacht Club in San Francisco from 2008-11, as a coach for the U.S. Olympic Sailing Team, and as a member of the 2013 America’s Cup Race Management Group. Mike also serves as U.S. Sailing Development Team Coach. In a former life, Mike was a mechanical engineer with engineering consulting firm Hatch, and graduated with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario in Canada. contact: charlesriversailingacademy@gmail.com cell: (415) 361-1287
